Here’s your chance to contribute to the a movie on an oft-overlooked aspect of Caribbean culture, the steelpan.

British director Keith Musaman Morton and Trini-American producer Charysse Tia Harper are on a mission to share the story of the steelpan in their new film project, Panomundo. Panomundo (the title is a combination of steelpan and the Spanish word mundo, which translates to world) is set to be showcased in 2013, but the directors have already issued a seven-minute promo video online to give viewers a taste of the film to come.
The two award-winning filmmakers are raising funds, and attention, to tell the controversial story of the oil drum turned highly-respected and adopted musical instrument. The film sheds light on how the instrument was created and the stigma that soon followed behind the pan players, who were commonly called Panners or Pansmen….

Bunji takes well, a different route on his latest appropriately titled single “Differentology.” We hear the “Gyul Dem Dahlin” spit the usual Carnival fare over a Sheriff Music/J-Rod Records track with additional instrumentation by Nigel Rojas. We like the direction Bunji is headed, perhaps he can be the pioneer of the neo-soca movement and have it reach a more global audience. You ready?

You get a little history, some of the present, and of course the future – the shifting fashion landscapes that have occurred over time, of course carnival influences, and more.
It’s directed by Trevor Franchise.
Starting last night here in NYC, cariBBeing is presenting their third annual Flatbush Film festival through November 10th.
This year’s focus is West Indian film and features a lineup of films from Jamaica, Martinique, Trinidad & the UK such as Doubles With Slight Pepper, Ring Di Alarm, Stones In The Sun, No Soca, No Life, Barrio Cuba, as well as the classic 1975 Trinidad/UK drama Pressure, among others.
Screenings will take place at TriBeCa Cinema, Maysles Theater and Brooklyn Heights Cinema and general admission is $15; $10 for students and seniors.

It’s safe to say that Mr. London has been a very busy man lately. Theophilus London has teamed up with classic American brand, Cole Haan, on a blue suede hard-bottom shoe. Check out the photos above.
The “Cole Haan Theophilus Blue Suede Buck” looks awesome and is the dress shoe to have this season. The collab comes complete with a 10″ vinyl of London’s cover of Nat King Cole’s “Calypso Blues.”
The navy uppers are made with nubuck suede from American cowhides, which means the shoe, offset with a bright blue outsole, is a quality hard-bottom — complete with gold embellishments to the eyets and cobble nails, and traditonal cobbling techniques like a “Gentleman’s Corner” to keep pant cuffs from catching the heel. The perforated leather lining and foam latex foot bed ensures that you can go sockless comfortably too. Swag.
Nina Simone had no filter. She spoke with candor about civil rights when many in her position didn’t dare. She sang about uncomfortable subjects and made sure her audiences understood what those songs were really about.
Setting the contemporary archetype for a breakthrough artist, Theophilus Lonon dropped three mixtapes before releasing any product for sale. Utilizing a mix of ’80s downtown art/music aesthetics and postmodern viral freedom, he put art ahead of commerce and gained fame without the help of a major label or marketing push.
