LargeUp Interviews Aloe Blacc.

Thursday, June 9th, 2011

The folks over at LargeUp chop it up with the young crooner and horn player, Aloe Blacc, on his heritage and music to date.

Check out the intro below…

When we conceived of the idea for our Now Things series focusing on cutting-edge artists across all genre boundaries who happen to have roots in the Caribbean, Aloe Blacc was the artist we had in mind. In the time since we first got hyped about his eclectic catalog of soul, rap and salsa, he has gone on quite a rampage of world domination, performing on Jimmy Fallon, taking a Gold record in France and storming the UK charts with his HBO-placed single “I Need A Dollar” (currently at #3). Although much of the buzz has been about that particular song, Aloe’s versatility as a writer and performer gets clearer and clearer, whether he’s singing about Panama on “Patria Mia” (below), translating John Legend into Spanish or putting down his own reggae cover onstage in Germany. In the midst of that whirlwind, and right before he was set to bring his long-running, Sunday afternoon Los Angeles party The Do-Over to Puerto Rico, Aloe spent the better part of a mellow, thoughtful afternoon to sit in the sun with us at Habana Outpost in Brooklyn and go deep on his Panamanian roots, his Stones Throw LP Good Things and all the unwritten chapters of the book called Aloe Blacc.

DJ Asho: Interview & Limited-Edition Tee + CD Sale.

Friday, December 31st, 2010

If you’re a frequent reader of this site, you’ve seen the name here many times before: Ariel Fernandez aka DJ Asho. Ever wonder what makes the man tick? Well then, you’re in luck as he recently sat down with the folks at Planet Timba for an interview on his life, interests and future aspirations. I’ve posted a short interview with him here before, but this one goes a bit more in depth. Check out an excerpt from the conversation below….

…Peoples sometimes get caught up with ego-tripping and this society embraces individualism over community. Hypocrisy exists in certain individuals, associations or institutions where they say they are about working in and for the community and but they don’t embrace other efforts. They don’t promote events if their logo or their names are not associated. Everybody has a blog, everybody has a non-profit, and everybody is trying to leave his or her mark on a very personal level. I do not have an ego problem where I need to prove if I am talented or not as a creator. I am all about empowering the community…

NEW YORK, NY – On Sunday, July 11th, DJs Bobbito Garcia, Laylo and Sake One reinvigorate the vibrant ‘60s and ’70s Salsa sounds of New York City at their annual party ¡SIEMPRE! A DJ TRIBUTE TO FANIA RECORDS.

Taking inspiration from the label’s groundbreaking artists (Willie Colón, Hector Lavoe, and Celia Cruz to name a few), the ¡SIEMPRE! crew blend Latin music (bomba, boogalu, descarga, guaguanco, rumba, son montuno, etc.) for the modern dance floor, adding in elements of hip-hop, soul, jazz, house, and reggae, making the classic recordings more accessible to a younger audience while retaining its authentic flavor.

Anchored by Bobbito Garcia, a global DJ legend for multiple genres and an icon for urban Latinos everywhere, ¡SIEMPRE! is also driven by DJ Laylo and DJ Sake One. Born in Puerto Rico to Dominican parents, Laylo is the co-founder of Liberation Lounge (NYC) and has ignited dance floors from Berlin to Brazil. Sake One is among the most respected DJs from the Bay Area (CA) ever, and in 2008, Fania released his Fania Live 03 mixed CD worldwide.

¡SIEMPRE! A DJ TRIBUTE TO FANIA RECORDS presents the classics of yesteryear infused with the consciousness of today, creating a unique event that will bring three generations of salsa fans as well as people of all different backgrounds together!

El Súper 30th Anniversary Tribute This Friday At The Bronx Museum.

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Click the flier or check the info below…

El Súper is the quintessential Cuban film. A dramatic comedy, it focuses on the domestic experiences of a Cuban family that left Cuba after the outbreak of the revolution. It tells the story of Roberto Amador González, his wife, Aurelia, and their daughter, Aurelita, in New York City. Roberto, a middle-aged man of humble origins and underprivileged background, works as a building superintendent in Manhattan. The film concentrates on his family’s experiences as marginal people in a country with a language and traditions different from their own. The fact that they live in the basement of the building where Roberto works underscores the sense of imprisonment and marginalization that the characters suffer. Cold weather and snow enhance the sense of desolation in the film….

As usual, there’s no cover for the event. Following the screening is a Q&A with original play writer Iván Acosta and a performance by Cuban Jazz and Salsa outfit UNity. For more info hit up the BX Museums’s site.

Peace to Asho for the info…
