Gregory Isaacs “Cool Ruler Mixtape” @ Breath of Life.

Monday, May 31st, 2010

Hopefully your long weekend is treating you well…(those in the US anyway…)

I should have maybe brought you this earlier in the day, before you headed out the BBQs that would have served as a perfect scene for the music, but since the summer’s just getting started, I’m sure you’ll all put it to good use eventually.

Check out the Gregory Isaacs mixtape, put together by the folks over at Breath Of Life, below…

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Gregory Anthony Isaacs – 15 July 1950 (or is it 1951?), Fletchers Land, Kingston, Jamaica, is the originator of “lover’s rock,” a whole sub-genre of reggae. There are more than 300 Gregory Isaacs albums circulating in the world. That’s right, over 300 different recordings. Sure at least 100 to 150 of them are compilations put together by diverse producers, each trying to corner the market on the “cool ruler” treasure chest of reggae recordings.

Much like Bob Marley, you don’t have to be a fan of reggae to recognize the importance of this artist—in this case there are literally over a hundred other love rockers out there, each of whom has their own following, but all of them owe a debt to Gregory Isaacs

Boomshots Interviews Sanchez.

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Great interview at Boomshots.com with legendary reggae crooner Sanchez. I somehow missed part one, but check out both parts at the links below…

Sanchez is one of those year-to-year singers who’s too often forgotten. So consistently stellar are his crystalline vocals, so unwavering is his standard of excellence, that we sometimes take him for granted. In such cases the best thing to do is walk away for a few years and make them miss you. After all, the man has been singing his heart out since the late ’80s, investing improbable pop songs with so much drama and passion that you forget all about the originals. Then he drops an album like the all-original 1995 masterpiece Praise Him, and the reggae world goes into a frenzy. But apart from being sampled all over the ““Dipset Anthem”,” mainstream success has eluded this supremely gifted vocalist. Not that he’s hurting in the least.

Sanchez’s popularity among diehard reggae fans is so unshakeable that he will never have to chase after the trappings of stardom. Maybe that’s why it’s taken me so long for me to land this interview. I’ve been trying for 15 years—give or take. There have been some near misses, but this past Christmas Eve, I finally heard the words I’ve been longing for all this time: You’re on with Sanchez…

“Right yah now I’m taking it easy
Check my steps, I’m not in a hurry
Soon I’ll have the things that I needed so bad
Morning sun rising behind me
Stars at night come out to remind me
To give thanks for everything that I have.
All is well I’ve got my health and in such good shape
Pockets broke and I’ve got nothing, waiting for the break
But I’m giving thanks, all I’ve got
Giving thanks, whether or not
Giving thanks for the life in me
Giving thanks oh God.
Right yah now by friends I’m surrounded
Are but few I’m glad I’m not crowded
Just enough, just enough for me to concentrate
One by one I’m counting my blessings
Getting close to goals that I’m setting
And if I make mistakes, correct me, don’t you hesitate.”

Walshy Fire, Frank 151 & Riddimstream presents: DECADES, Vol. One.

Friday, August 14th, 2009

Some people let the music speak for itself. Walshy Fire is not one of those people. But when you’ve just put together a 95-track mix of 60s, 70, 80’s and 90’s dancehall, you can pretty much say whatever you want. Check out Walshy’s words below…

“The Maddest Oldies Dancehall Series has finally hit the streets!

Decades – “the year to year cd!” From the cd starts the fire starts blazing. Fire pon a weak heart reggae dancehall lover on this one.

The first Major flame is the Beres Hammond “Till You’ve got love”….bassline like how dancehall suppose to be.

After that it goes into the Everybody Bawling riddim mixed with a Beenie Man that the entire world is use to on a completey different riddim in its original style…the same riddim as barrington levys “murderer”.

Mixed after is dancehall icon Nitty Gritty, but its the next big fireball. Malibu”My friends” performed live on stage shows a million times in the live entertainer days.

This 45 is completely hard to get and for many, never heard before on wax….”
