If you think pinstriped suits with bold, chalky lines will make you look like a douchey 1980s Wall Street wannabe, you haven’t seen this slimmer, shorter, altogether cooler new generation. Here, New York Giants breakout Victor Cruz proves these suits have a whole new swagger.

Usain Bolt Wants To Play Soccer

Monday, August 30th, 2010

via: The Guardian

This morning I was reading news from one of my favorite soccer blogs dirty tackle, that Usain Bolt wants to play soccer. There is no question dude has got athletic skills (mainly fast running skills) but I don’t know if he has football skills… Manchester United Football skills at that. Here is what Bolt says about it in his autobiography:

“Ideally, if I was to play football, I’d sign for my favorite team — Manchester United. People say it’s not realistic but nobody has seen me play so you never know. If Alex Ferguson saw me in one of those charity matches he might think I could replace Ryan Giggs.”

The Gaurdian explained the lifetime Man U supporter is serious about playing.

I ask about his ambitions. Ultimately, he says, he’d love to make a go of playing football professionally. He’s being deadly serious. One of the perks of being Usain Bolt is that sporting stars love to meet him, so whenever he’s travelling and there’s time, he tries to train with a top football team. Last year it was Manchester United, a few days ago it was Bayern Munich. He’s still carrying a copy of the French sporting newspaper L’Equipe, which features a spread on his football skills and praise from Bayern manager Louis van Gaal. He shows me a photo of himself with his arm wrapped round the dwarfed 6ft German forward Miroslav Klose. “If I keep myself in shape, I can definitely play football at a high level,” he says.

Here is some footage of a recent trip Bolt made to Bayern Munich FC and there’s a quick shot of his “football skills”.

Iverson and Thierry Henry are awkward together

Tuesday, September 22nd, 2009

I caught this on Dirty Tackle and thought it was worth a re-post check it out…

Theirry Henry and Allen Iverson, now sadly carrying on his basketball career with the Memphis Grizzlies, were brought together in Barcelona by their shared sponsor Reebok for…I don’t know — some kind of cross-promotional brand synergy thing (or maybe corporate hypnosis and introduction to cannibalism?).

Facts we can gather from this clip:

-AI likes distinctly baggier clothing than Titi.
-Iverson can’t spin a football on his finger, but thinks Henry is capable of doing so with his foot.
-Nothing can remind of the pointless monotony of life quicker than the piano music in a department store.
-Uncomfortable laughter always immediately precedes two celebrities saying goodbye to each other.
-Seriously, is Iverson wearing some kind of dress with individual leg holes?

The 2008 Reebok commercial where Thierry talks about how much his brand-mate just happens to be someone he hugely admires…

The Three Degrees: The Caribbean Footballers

Tuesday, June 23rd, 2009

In the late ’70s, British football club West Bromwich Albion had the most exciting team in English football… They played a trio of black players which they called the Three Degrees (named after the a female Philly vocal group); the late Laurie Cunningham, Cyrille Regis and Brendon Batson. Two of the Three Degrees where Caribbean born, Regis from French Guiana and Baston from Grenada.

Although not by any means the first black footballers to play professionally in England, the Three Degrees challenged the established racism of English football and marked a watershed that allowed a generation of footballers to enter the game who would previously have been excluded by their ethnic background. A strong and fast traditional centre-forward, Regis was voted PFA Young Player of the Year in 1978 and earned the Goal of the Season award in 1981–82, for his powerful long-range shot against Norwich City in the FA Cup.

You may be wondering why the picture above has more than 3 black players in it. It’s a picture of Albion’s “Black” XI, essentially its all the black squad members of Albion’s 1st and reserve squad.

Check out this clip where the trio link up to mash up Man United 5-3, it’s an amazing performance. Notice how the crowd reacts to the players and the coaches commentary at the end, it’s just a testament to what these guys had to face.
