Asho has hooked up with the Bronx Museum to present a FREE screening of the critically-acclaimed documentary The Black Power Mixtape 1967 – 1973. Check out the info on the event below…
Friday, February 3, 2012,
6:00pm until 10:00pm
FIRST FRIDAYS!
The Black Power Mixtape
Film screening honoring Black History Month
FREE!
THE BLACK POWER MIXTAPE 1967-1975 mobilizes a treasure trove of 16mm material shot by Swedish journalists who came to the US drawn by stories of urban unrest and revolution. Gaining access to many of the leaders of the Black Power Movement—Stokely Carmichael, Bobby Seale, Angela Davis and Eldridge Cleaver among them—the filmmakers captured them in intimate moments and remarkably unguarded interviews. Thirty years later, this lush collection was found languishing in the basement of Swedish Television. Director Göran Olsson and co-producer Danny Glover bring this footage to light in a mosaic of images, music and narration chronicling the evolution one of our nation’s most indelible turning points, the Black Power movement. Music by Questlove and Om’Mas Keith, and commentary from prominent African-American artists and activists who were influenced by the struggle – including Erykah Badu, Harry Belafonte, Talib Kweli, and Melvin Van Peebles – give the historical footage a fresh, contemporary resonance and makes the film an exhilarating, unprecedented account of an American revolution.

If you’re in NYC this evening, be sure to make it out to this. Should be a good one. Check out the details below…
If you’re in NYC this Friday, we suggest you make your way over to KIX NYC and check out a new photo exhibit by a friend we love Bobbito Garcia + his partner in crime Kevin Couliau. The dynamic duo have been hard at work putting the finishing touches on their new documentary on NYC pick-up basketball called “Doin’ it in the Park.” Instead they will exhibit those in 2012 in connection with the release of the film.
The photos are not stills from the film but rather an exploration into Gracia and Couliau’s passion of photography in the environment they know best, the b-ball courts of NYC.
Details:
K1X NYC
359 Lafayette St.
New York, NY
Friday, October 7
6:00pm – 10:00pm
About the Exhibit:
Kevin Couliau and Bobbito Garcia have been touring the NYC playgrounds for quite some time now. Whenever they were not playing ball or talking smack themselves, they took pictures and videos capturing the unique atmosphere that can only be found in the Mekka of basketball. Reason enough to highlight some of their works in an exhibition that will portrait the basketball spirit of NYC with passion and attention to detail like it has never been done before!
Check out more info on the show after the jump…

It’s safe to say that Mr. London has been a very busy man lately. Aside from his music and his new album, he’s set to drop a collaboration with fashion brand Cole Hann, The ‘Cole Haan Theophilus Blue Suede Buck,’ and is featured on the cover of the newest issue of Wax Poetics, along with soul + jazz legend Nina Simone.
Check out the details on the Cole Hann collaboration & Wax Poetics issue below…
Theophilus London has teamed up with classic American brand, Cole Haan, on a blue suede hard-bottom shoe. Check out the photos above.
The “Cole Haan Theophilus Blue Suede Buck” looks awesome and is the dress shoe to have this season. The collab comes complete with a 10″ vinyl of London’s cover of Nat King Cole’s “Calypso Blues.”
The navy uppers are made with nubuck suede from American cowhides, which means the shoe, offset with a bright blue outsole, is a quality hard-bottom — complete with gold embellishments to the eyets and cobble nails, and traditonal cobbling techniques like a “Gentleman’s Corner” to keep pant cuffs from catching the heel. The perforated leather lining and foam latex foot bed ensures that you can go sockless comfortably too. Swag.
Nina Simone had no filter. She spoke with candor about civil rights when many in her position didn’t dare. She sang about uncomfortable subjects and made sure her audiences understood what those songs were really about.
Setting the contemporary archetype for a breakthrough artist, Theophilus Lonon dropped three mixtapes before releasing any product for sale. Utilizing a mix of ’80s downtown art/music aesthetics and postmodern viral freedom, he put art ahead of commerce and gained fame without the help of a major label or marketing push.
After the jump, check out the invite for the Cole Hann shoe release event…

The folks at 10.Deep and Federation Sound collab to drop some tunes to get folks ready for the Bashment that is Labor Day Week in BKNYC. The full mix will drop this Saturday, but check out the preview featuring Kardi, Sean Paul and more below…
Labor Day Weekend is nearly upon us… And those that know Brooklyn know this weekend the streets of Flatbush and Crown Heights will explode for the Carribean Day parade. In the spirit of the many Caribbean nations pouring into our streets to tear it up, we decided to contribute to the mayhem by throwing a new mixtape project into the mix – one that would end the summer with a bang… or a murder.
We teamed up with the mighty Federation Sound to bring you SUMMER MURDA, a unique, 48-track soundclash mix full of exclusive dubplates from a wide range of dancehall’s greatest new and old artists – including the likes of Buju Banton, Vybz Kartel, Sean Paul, Chino, Mr. Lexx, Kardinal Offishall and Flippa Mafia to true OGs Johnny Osbourne, Shinehead and Freddie McGregor. Our collective focus was not to bring you the latest, newest dancehall, but to create something timeless. Here’s a quick taste of what you can expect to hear…
Federation Sound was originally founded in 1999 by Max Glazer, Kenny Meez and Cipha Sounds and has since grown to become a worldwide force in reggae music (and include Alric & Bodyd from Fame FM, Jamaica) and the late Disco D (RIP). Representing Brooklyn, Jamaica and Philly, they have collaborated with Sean Paul, Vybz Kartel, Baby Cham and Aidonia, as well has have produced dancehall remixes for Rihanna, when not keeping up with a busy travel schedule. Federation also host weekly shows on eastvillageradio.com, iTunes Radio/ and Scion’s streaming mixshow, as well as their own Federation Invasion podcast.
We’ll be dropping SUMMER MURDA online on Saturday, September 3rd at 5pm (Brooklyn time) and will be celebrating with catered food, drink and soundclash at an outdoor launch affair from 7-11pm (see details below) with Max Glazer and guests (Federation Sound), DJ Ayres (The Rub) and Nick Catchdubs (Fool’s Gold). We’ll see you there…
After the jump, check out the flier for the tape’s launch party on Saturday night…

Rubble Kings: Premiers Thursday 8/18 at 9PM
From 1968 to 1975, gangs ruled a New York City riven by race turmoil, white flight and economic deterioration. Neither law enforcement nor social agencies could end the escalating bloodshed and social chaos. Peace came only through the most unlikely chain of events that would change the nation for generations to come by giving birth to hip-hop culture. Rubble Kings, the most comprehensive documentation to date of life during this era of gang rule, tells the story of how a few extraordinary, forgotten people, did the impossible — and how their actions impacted the world.
