Cynthia Oliver/COCo Dance Theatre’s Rigidigidim De Bamba De: Ruptured Calypso takes calypso in and out of the carnival context and layers it with mythology, hertory, and dance. Six women from the Caribbean diaspora explore “rupture,” or break, and discover a shared Caribbean identity across geographical, cultural and aesthetic borders. Through vibrant movement, sound and text, the performers negotiate their individual identities and cut through calypso’s melodious innuendo to reveal its political subversive truth-telling and rawness then delivers it in raucous and downright unrespectable levels….
The shows last performance is tonight. For more info and to purchase tickets, click here: Rigidigidim De Bamba De: Ruptured Calypso.

Byron Aloysius St. Elmo Lee OD, OJ passed away yesterday morning at the University Hospital of the West Indies in Kingston at age 73, after a long battle with cancer. In the world of Caribbean music he was better known as The Dragon, heading up one of the most recognizable bands in Ska, Soca & Calypso, The Dragonaires.
One of the good things about being a musician is that you can leave a legacy behind with you. In Mr. Lee’s case, he’s left behind over 60 albums, some of which I’ve posted here. Check them out after the jump.

After hosting shows by Badu and Jill Scott the last two weeks, the MLK Concert Series @ Wingate High School in BK is coming through this Monday with some of the Caribbean’s finest. Check out the lineup: Beres Hammond, Bunji Garlin & The Mighty Sparrow. And, as always, the show is 100% FREE. Be sure to get there early though, to get a good seat. You don’t want to end up on the other side of the fence, like the folks in the photo above.
