In Frank Chapter 42: Cuba, Helena de Bragança did a piece for the book in which she described the time she spent at a cultural center that is home to transvestites, gays, and punk rockers. She decided to tell the story of los frikis, a group of punk rockers who are constantly fighting against a society that looks down on them. A few even went as far as to infect themselves with HIV. How punk rock is that?
Recently a movie debuted at the Sundance Film Festival portraying the lives of los frikis. Ticket To Paradise displays the story of Eunice, a young girl who flees from her abusive father and ends up traveling alongside a group of street kids who steal, deal drugs, bang their heads to heavy metal, and have no support system. Throughout the film, Eunice is troubled about her hellish environment but also develops a camaraderie and family she’s never known before.
