Haile Selassie was heir to a dynasty that traced its lineage back to Menelik I the child of Queen of Sheeba and King Solomon. Yesterday marked the anniversary of Haile Selassie I coronation as king of Ethiopia… On Nov 2, 1930 Haile Selassie I was crowned Emperor of Ethiopia that’s when the Rastafarian movement began. Due to large press coverage and publicity during his coronation, his name spread and almost instantly after he was crowned king, a strong following began in Jamaica. Those followers of course became known as Rastas.
Given the Rastas interpretation of the Bible they believe in Jesus Christ and that Haile Selassie I to be the messiah returned. He is also considered as a part of the Holy Trinity. Rastafarians derived the name of the religion from the pre-coronation name of Haile Selassie, Ras Tafari Makonnen.
Interestingly enough, the Rasta movement still goes strong even after Haile Selassie I rejected the idea that he is a deity, all of it was captured in an interview he did with CBS news in 1967.
