I had to give my boy Ariel “Asho” Fernandez a shout here on his event tomorrow at the Bronx Museum. If his name sounds familiar it’s because he was featured in the post on Cuban Hip-Hop we put up last week (check the last video at the :23 second mark…). If you’re in the area, or are looking for something to do this Friday, be sure to make it out. Details are below….
Summer Special:

New laws aimed at curbing illegal migration in the Caribbean have left thousands of first generation Dominicans unable to work, study or travel.
Authorities there in charge of issuing documents no longer recognise them as citizens … even though the Constitution does.
Many say it is because of the colour of their skin.
In the first part of our series on race and racism in Latin America, Al Jazeera’s Lucia Newman reports from the Dominican Republic.
Peace to Larry for the look on this one…

Jamaica’s other gold medal hopefuls include Sherone Simpson and Veronica Campbell-Brown.
If you are wondering how a country of just over 2.5 million people can produce so many world-class sprinters, check this article, which gives the history of Jamaica’s track and field training program. 30 years ago, the idea of Jamaica challenging the world for gold medals was a joke…so much for that. When they return they can finally get to chasing dem crazy baldheads outta town.

I was reading this article this morning, and thought to myself that the woman in question here HAD to be Caribbean. Turns out, I was right. The story, in short….
If there was any question of where (British Olympic Sprinter Simeon) Williamson gets his speed, this article provides the answer: He gets it from his grandmother, 78-year-old Pearline Williamson, who had her purse stolen by a young woman recently, only to run her down and get the purse back. Pearline explains:
“The thief must have thought I was an easy touch because I’m elderly. …
“When she took my purse I had to do something so I ran after her and grabbed her as hard as I could.
“She said she hadn’t taken it at first, so I shook the life out of her until she finally gave it back. …
“It makes me so mad when people try to take your things,” she said. “Back in my day you had to work so hard for every penny.”
78!!! She does not play!! Let that be a lesson to anyone reading this: Do not mess with a Jamaican woman’s money. No matter how old she is.
